Quarantine is the perfect moment for self-care. It is also the perfect time to give your hair a break and allow yourself to try homemade hair masks. Hair masks are good for different reasons. They help to fight dryness which also results in breakage, split ends, frizzy, and unhealthy hair caused by the daily life, styling, heat and harsh products. See how you can bring your hair back to life with 3 of our favourite recipes to try at home.

 

Here’s a few tips:

  1. Thoroughly mix the ingredients to avoid chunks getting stuck in hair and make it hard to wash out
  2. You can wrap a warm towel over your hair or wear a shower cap for best results
  3. Don’t use hair masks more than once a week

 

Flaxseed mask

Benefits

Flaxseeds are rich in vitamin E. They are the perfect ingredient to achieve smooth, silky and shiny hair from home. The Omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseeds are known to nourish and help hair growth. It prevents break and split ends but also help with eczema and dandruff.

 

Ingredients

  • ¼  cup of whole flaxseeds
  • 2 cups of water

Mix 2 cups of water and ¼ cup of whole flaxseeds into a pot. Bring it to a boil and stir until it forms a gel. Let it sit for 20 minutes. When it starts to cool down, separate the grains from the gel by pouring it into a strainer or use the tight technique.

 

Once the gel has been collected, let it thicken up. The mixture should be similar to an egg white.
Put it on your hair, massage the scalp and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Then, wash and condition your hair as usual.
If there is any gel left, don’t waste it. You can bottle it and store in the fridge for up to 7 days.

 

Coconut oil mask

Benefits

Coconut oil can be used as an effective hair mask to help you keep your hair healthy.
Coconut oil penetrates deeply into hair follicles, protects and nourishes hair. Rich in fatty acid, it also stimulates growth and moisturize hair.
It also has antimicrobial property that help getting rid of dandruff and other scalp problems.

 

Ingredient

  • Extra-virgin coconut oil

Simply take the desired amount of coconut oil into your hands and let it melt. Once completely melted, apply it into your hair.
Then, you can decide to leave it for 20 minutes or overnight. Rinse the mask off and wash your hair as usual.

 

Avocado, aloe vera and olive oil mask

Benefits

Avocado contains natural oils and nutrients that helps to restore dry hair with a deep moisturisation.
It contains vitamin E, a natural antioxidant that prevent damaged hair and make it healthier. It stimulates hair growth.

Aloe vera can be used directly from the plant or from a ready-made gel.
It contains healing enzymes that repair damaged hair, boost a healthy hair growth and reduce hair loss. It has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help with dandruff, irritation and soothe the scalp.

Olive oil also has amazing benefits to hair. It contains squalene that helps regenerate hair shafts and make them stronger. It also makes hair softer and healthier. Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants helps with split ends, breakage and moisture.

 

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons aloe vera gel

Cut a ripe avocado, remove the pit and scoop the meat with a spoon. Mash the avocado (or blend it) until there are no chunks left. Combine with the olive oil and aloe vera gel together until you get a smooth paste. Apply the mixture to your hair and don’t forget your scalp. Let it sit for 15/20 minutes and wash your hair as usual.
